A Fertile Brat Taken in the Woods

It seemed like they walked an awful long time through the dense woods to get to the campsite. Layla followed behind her new friend, Lauren, trying not to get stuck in tangled branches while keeping a lookout for snakes, spiders, and other critters. There was no path in sight. Layla was starting to think that she wasn’t meeting Lauren’s friends for camping, that this was some cruel joke played on the new girl.

She sighed with relief when she heard voices, laughter, and the crackling of a bonfire. They arrived at a clearing where four other girls sat in chairs around the fire, sipping from red plastic cups. Layla wondered what was in those cups. She’d told her mom that there would be no drinking, and Layla hated lying to her mom, even if she hadn’t meant to.

Her mom had been so excited about the camping trip that Layla didn’t have to convince her to let her go. Layla had been at the new school for a full semester before making her first friend, Lauren, the daughter of a deacon at a prominent church. Layla’s mom had felt guilty about moving her daughter to another school when it was her senior year, taking her away from her old friends, and was thrilled when Layla had a chance to get out of the house and be with people her own age.

“Sup, bitch,” Kelly, one of the girls by the fire said to Lauren.

Though Layla had only been at their school for a short time, she knew Kelly was one of the most popular girls. With her shoulder length blonde hair, killer figure, and impeccable fashion sense, how could she not be?

“What’s up,” Lauren said, walking over to the table that held the plastic cups and a keg. She bid Layla to follow her.

Lauren filled two cups with frothy beer, and handed one to Layla. The cup was cold in her hand, and the beer had a bitter smell. Lauren took a large swallow, watching Layla as she did.

“Go ahead, it’ll warm you up,” Lauren said.

Layla stared at the golden, frothy liquid. She didn’t want to tell Lauren that she’d never drank before, and hadn’t planned to until she was fully legal. She imagined herself at twenty-one having the occasional wine with dinner, or fruity cocktail at a social gathering. She knew it was wrong to drink at only eighteen, but Lauren was staring at her, egging her on with her eyes.

After taking a small sip, Layla tried to hide her look of distaste as she choked down the beer.Why do people like this stuff?she wondered.

She and Lauren joined the rest of the girls by the fire.

“Do you guys know Layla?” Lauren said.

The other girls regarded her coldly. Layla took another sip of beer.

“You look familiar,” Kelly said. “Are you, like, a freshman or something?”

“Senior,” Layla said. “I just moved here this year.”

“Layla and I have theatre together,” Lauren said. “She gave a great monologue last week. She’s really funny.
